This month The Greenery Inc., is commemorating two anniversary milestones - our 45th Anniversary in the Lowcountry and at the same time, we are celebrating a new milestone – 10 years as an employed owned company.
The Greenery has a long history on Hilton Head….back in 1973 my parents, Ruthie and Berry Edwards, moved to this area and bought a small landscape nursery with a staff of just six employees, a couple of rusty pickup trucks and the desire to try something new. I remember fondly spending afternoons and weekends helping out in the garden nursery. None of us could have ever imagined how far this company would expand and grow. Today, 45 years later, The Greenery is one of the largest landscaping companies in the Southeast.
Here at The Greenery we have always recognized our past and vision for future growth while acknowledging that all our efforts have one main focus – it’s about the people. That’s why before my dad retired he started working towards an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) as a way to give something back to his dedicated employees – many of whom were like family. By 2007, The Greenery became a 100% employee owned company.
That was ten years ago. Now, a recession, 2 hurricanes and a lot of work later – we are proud to be celebrating 10 years of 100% employee ownership. Something that we take great pride in at The Greenery. It’s more than just a job. We believe that investing in our people helps foster an environment that draws some of the best people in the industry to our company. And our commitment to our people helps them want to develop a long term career here.
What started as my parent’s dream and a tiny crew of six people back in 1973, The Greenery today employs more than 650 highly motivated professionals.
I am so proud to say that today in 2018, The Greenery is GROWING and together we are looking forward to many more anniversaries to come!
