Our History

The Greenery Inc. was first established on Hilton Head Island in 1973 by Ruthie and Berry Edwards. After vacationing on the island, the couple became enchanted with the area. And like so many, they decided to live the island life and move to Hilton Head.

When the couple relocated, they bought a small landscape nursery (Hillside Landscape Nursery) with a staff of six employees, a couple of old pickup trucks and the desire to do something different.  Ruthie and Berry focused on growing their business by hiring the most knowledgeable and experienced landscaping and gardening staff in the lowcountry. That commitment to providing the highest-quality customer service in the area has helped The Greenery grow into one of the largest and most highly respected landscaping companies in the Southeast.

Lee Edwards, son of Ruthie and Berry, started his career at The Greenery as a young boy who spent his afternoons and weekends helping out in the garden nursery. Lee, now The Greenery’s CEO, is providing new leadership at the helm of this employee-owned corporation.

One of the unique features of The Greenery garden center is an old church building – circa 1873. This charming, historic building was originally the Old Bethlehem Church just outside of Ridgeland, South Carolina.  Ruthie Edwards saw the “For Sale” sign on the church, purchased it  and had it moved 28 miles by flatbed truck and barge to its current location on William Hilton Parkway where it initially housed The Greenery’s offices.

Today, it houses the Antiques & Garden Collectibles shop filled with antiques, garden related home and yard accessories and unique gift items.

The Greenery, Inc. recently celebrated their 40th anniversary in February of 2013. Founder, Berry Edwards now retired commented, “ Who would have thought our little landscape company back in the 70’s would be what it is today!” The company has grown from a small family owned business to an employee owned company poised for growth in South Carolina and Georgia.

While recognizing their past and vision for future growth, The Greenery Inc is quick to acknowledge that all their efforts are about their people. CEO, Lee Edwards states, “We are a company that invests in and relies on our people who in turn care help grow and contribute to the company and to the customers we serve.”
