We are excited to share that our very own Tim Drake won a state award for his passion for plants. Tim was awarded third place in the statewide Clemson University’s Extension Service annual “Carolina Yards” competition for his own personal yard. He was the only winner from our area. We are so proud of Tim!

The “Carolina Yards” program works with residents in creating healthy, watershed-friendly landscapes that create a low maintenance yard that works with nature, rather than against it.

Applying his knowledge as Landscape Enhancement Designer and Business Developer at The Greenery, Inc. Tim’s yard was evaluated using a scorecard based on the 12 principles of the “Carolina Yards” Program. These principles include: selecting plants that fit the conditions of your yard to help reduce the need for irrigation, fertilizer, pesticides, and pruning; conserving water to reduce demand on municipal water sources; removing invasive plants; and managing yard pests responsibly by limiting the use of pesticides.

Perhaps the win was made even sweeter as Tim, like many Lowcountry residents, had to do a lot of work on his yard this year as a result of Hurricane Matthew.

Tim says, “I’m very excited to receive the Extension Service “Carolina Yard” award,” Tim tells me that he received a lot of advice and inspiration from Kathy Boerner, a local plant enthusiast/specialist and one of the owners of Green Goods wholesale nursery in Hardeeville. He also says he’s proud when people see The Greenery truck parked in his driveway, because then everyone “knows they can have the same quality of work applied in their own yards.” We applaud Tim’s efforts that mirror our corporate purpose statement: Enhancing people lives through beautiful landscaping.

By using these environmentally friendly landscape practices, you can also make positive changes in the environmental quality of your own yard, neighborhood, and surrounding waterways. Read more about the “Carolina Yards” program at http://www.clemson.edu/extension/carolinayards.
