Our History

The Greenery's history began in 1972. Ruthie and Berry Edwards came to Hilton Head Island in the fall of 1972 for a vacation and like most who now live here, they were enchanted by the island and decided to move from North Carolina.

In 1973, they bought what was known as Hillside Landscape Nursery. From the beginning, Ruthie and Berry focused on growing the business by building and maintaining one of the most knowledgeable and experienced maintenance and gardening staffs on the island.

One of the unique features of The Greenery garden center location is an historic old church building – circa 1873. Ruthie saw the “For Sale” sign on the Old Bethlehem Church in Ridgeland, purchased it and had it moved 28 miles by flatbed truck and a barge to have it placed where it is today. The building has been preserved and maintained, first as offices for The Greenery. It now houses the Antiques & Garden Collectibles shop filled with antiques, home and gift items and gardening delights.

Time marched on and Ruthie and Berry decided to retire. With their son, Lee returning from management of The Greenery LLC in Charleston, SC to oversee the Hilton Head operations, Ruthie and Berry made a major decision. The company was restructured as a 100% employee owned company. Every employee now has a stake in its continued growth.

“...Who would have thought our little landscape company back in the 70’s would be what it is today!”
Ruthie & Berry Edwards
